Wisemen Seek King Jesus

December 24, 2017 Speaker: Michael Knight Series: Christmas

Topic: Christmas Passage: Matthew 2

I. The Search for King Jesus
- When did the Magi visit Jesus?
- They visited sometime after, but not immediately following Christ's birth.
- The family is now in a house, not a stable (Matthew 2:11).
- The Greek word for child means a little child, not a newborn.
- The Magi saw the star announcing the birth of the Christ child. It would’ve taken weeks or months to travel to where Jesus was.
- Most likely there were more than three wise men because it caught the attention of the people of Bethlehem and King Herod.
- The Magi most likely were not kings, but probably astrologers, magicians, or interpreters of dreams. They were probably Persians. Perhaps the influence of the captive Jews had influenced Persia-educated men in the wisdom of the Scriptures. The Scriptures enlighten.
- Whatever revelation they received from God, they whole-heartedly believed it. They were seekers of the Messiah.
- How did they seek King Jesus? They were earnest and relentless in their search for Jesus.

II. The Light Leading to King Jesus
- What was the star? It was a special messenger (possibly an angel with a torch) created specifically to announce King Jesus.
- What does the star mean? It was God’s supernatural way to lead the Magi to Jesus. Does the star represent the work of the Holy Spirit to lead us to Christ, and the light of God’s Word to show us the way and point us to King Jesus?

III. The Worship of King Jesus
- Whom did they worship? King Jesus
He’s the only One worthy of our worship.
- How did they worship? They prostrated themselves. This was a sign of humility, complete submission, wholehearted devotion, & surrender to King Jesus. Total submission precedes service.
- When grace is clearly understood, there will be a great deal of worship & praise, followed by service.

IV. What did they do after they worshipped?
- They opened their treasures and offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Their gifts were befitting a King.  Their acts of service were the best that they had. We should offer the best that we have.
- Spend time at the feet of King Jesus. Seeing Him in His Word promotes worship and right service.

Are you seeking King Jesus?
The Magi sought; they saw; they worshipped; they served.
