Dealing with Death and Grief

February 25, 2018 Speaker: Michael Knight Series: Death & Grief

Topic: Death & Grief Passage: Job 1:13–22

Job experienced great loss: his wealth, his children, and his health. Despite overwhelming circumstances, Job continued to glorify God in the midst of his grief.

Introductory Truths:
1. The Bible tells us that Christians will experience manifold trials. (1 Peter 1:6-7)
2. During those trials, God promises manifold grace. (2 Cor. 12:9)
3. The purpose of trials in a believer’s life is progressive sanctification.  (James 1:1-4)
- God wants you to be like Christ.

The Story of Job:
1. He was a spiritual man.
2. He was a wealthy and influential man.
3. He experienced great loss.
4. He glorified God in his grief.

How can we learn to deal with death, grief, and trials, and glorify God?

1. Start practicing living by faith now.
- The hot water will reveal what’s in the tea bag.
- The way you react to the "pebble" trials is the way you will react to the "mountain" trials.

2. Remember your theology.
- What we believe about death: (Heb. 9:27)
• Death comes to all.
• Death is the first step into eternity. (John 11:25; Daniel 12:2-4)
• Death means the end of suffering. (Revelation 7:17)
• Death means the beginning of eternal joy and peace. (2 Peter 3:13)
• Death means to be present with the Lord. (1 Corinthians 13:12; 1 John 3:2-3)

3. Remember what we believe about God.
- God is sovereign. He is in control.
- God is omniscient.  He knows best.
- God is loving. His love never changes.
- God is omnipotent.  He can do anything even if He chooses not to heal.
