As believers, Christ commands us to observe the Lord's Supper in remembrance of Him until He returns. Today's sermon examines Christ's words of agony spoken in the Garden of Gethsemane.
In Christ's words of agony on the cross, we previously saw (1) the awfulness of sin, (2) the character of sin's wage, and (3) the absolute holiness and inflexible justice of God. Today we will seek to understand the significance of Christ's words of agony in Gethsemane.
Let's look at the two aspects of Christ's words of agony in Gethsemane:
1. The Meaning of Gethsemane
- Gethsemane means “oil press or olive press” where olives were pressed out drop by drop.
- “It is indeed a fit footstool to the Cross, a footstool of agony unutterable and unparalleled. On the Cross then, Christ drained the Cup which was presented to Him in Gethsemane.” (Arthur Pink in The Seven Sayings of the Saviour on the Cross, pp. 74-75)
2. The Message of Gethsemane
It was a place of prayer, temptation, submission, betrayal, and agony.
Christ was forsaken so we could be forgiven!
