Just as a telescope magnifies and enlarges our view of a star, our life as a Christian should magnify and enlarge people’s view of God.
Three foundational truths:
1. We were created for God’s glory. (Isaiah 43:6-7)
2. We are saved for His glory. (Ephesians 1:5-6)
3. We are sanctified for His glory. (1 Thessalonians 4:3a)
“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” - John Piper
How do we magnify God? (Philippians 1:21)
Here’s the key:
1. Paul had the right view of life.
- How would you answer this question? For me to live is [ ].
- Paul answered it this way: For me to live is Christ.
- Before we do something, we should ask if it will give the right opinion of God. (Philippians 3:8; Romans 11:36)
- Paul’s view of living:
LIVING = KNOWING & MAGNIFYING CHRIST
- We will not glorify God until we understand that life is not all about us. Life is all about God’s glory, not ours.
2. Paul had the right view of death.
- Gain means profit or advantage.
- How could he view dying as gain?
- Paul knew dying would take him to a more intimate relationship with Christ.
- What are the advantages of being with the Lord in death? No more pain, temptation, battling the flesh, failures, tears, or distractions.
Paul looked at death as gain. (Philippians 1:21)
