Our Savior is the Light of the World. The definition of a Christian is one who is salt and light. Why should a believer be salt and light? How salty are you, and how bright is your light?
1. We are to be salt.
• Who is the salt of the earth?
- The Believer in Christ
• What does this passage teach us about the world? (Romans 3:23; 1 John 2:15-17)
- It teaches us that man left to himself will not improve. We are polluted by sin. A man who turns away from God is left to ruin. Man is fallen, wicked, sinful, and totally depraved.
• What does it mean to be salty?
- We are to be distinctly different from the world.
- We are to prevent the spread of evil, just like salt is a preservative from decay.
- We are to encourage others to accept Christ. Life without Christ is unsatisfying and bland.
2. We are to be light.
• Who is the light of the world?
- The Believer in Christ
• What does this teach us about the world?
- The world is full of spiritual darkness.
- God uses the Word of God presented through believers.
• How do we become the light of the world?
- Christ is the Light of the World. (John 8:12; 2 Corinthians 4:3-6)
- Christ lives in the believer, and the believer acts as a transmitter of the light of Christ.
• What is the function of light?
- It exposes and expels darkness.
- It explains the cause of darkness which is the fall of man—sin.
- It shows the only way out of darkness.
