Following in His Footsteps

July 15, 2018 Speaker: Chad Morris Series: Current Sermon

Topic: Christian Growth Passage: Philippians 2:1–9

As beloved children, we are to be imitators of God. We are to take the life of Christ and copy it as commanded in Scripture. (Ephesians 5:1-2; 1 Peter 2:21)

1. Jesus has always had the essential nature of being God. (Philippians 2:5-7)

- He is Deity. He is equal to God.

2. Jesus took on the essential nature of being human.

- He emptied Himself by adding on human form and nature.
- Sometimes we focus on Christ’s deity and ignore His humanity.

This means that...

3. Jesus is fully human.

• Scriptural Prophecies:

- Isaiah 11:1-2 - “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him.” The Holy Spirit would enable Him to do the things He needed to do.
- Luke 4:13-22 - “Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit.” The Holy Spirit empowered Him to minister to those around Him. The hearers were shocked. They said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”

• Scriptural Realities

- Matthew 12:28 - He cast out demons by the Spirit of God.
- Acts 10:38 - Christ did good and healed people through God’s power.
- Acts 1:8 - We possess the same Spirit that Christ possessed.
- Acts 2:1-2 - Jesus gave the command of the Great Commission by the power of the Holy Spirit.

- Christ’s reliance on the Holy Spirit doesn’t diminish His deity.

4. Jesus relied on the Holy Spirit in His day-to-day life of obedience.

- You must rely on the Holy Spirit’s empowerment in your day-to-day life of obedience!
- Without the Holy Spirit’s help and empowerment, we will fail. Christ needed the Holy Spirit; we need Him, too.

5. Jesus is our example.

- Seek God’s help.
- Be careful of the things that you allow in your life (input) because it will affect what comes out of your life (output). Saturate yourself with the Word and prayer.
- Be intentional in the way you live.
- Be consistent.
