Which Tree Are You?

February 24, 2019 Speaker: Aaron Coffey Series: Guest Speakers

Topic: Salvation Passage: Matthew 7:17–23

In Matthew 7, Jesus paints a picture of two trees: a good tree and a corrupt tree. How can you know which tree you are? Evangelist Aaron Coffey explains from God's Word and also shares his personal testimony of how God transformed his life.

1. The good tree represents the true believer.
• The fruit that hangs from the branches shows what kind of tree it is.
• The fruit that grows in the life of a Christian is a result of God’s life in them. (Galatians 5:22)
• God grows Himself in His people and produces good fruit.

2. The corrupt tree represents the unbeliever.
• God presents the possibility of people who look like believers on the outside due to religious activity, but are unbelievers and dead inside.
• These people manufacture fruit, but it doesn’t spring from God’s life working in them. (Titus 1:16)
• Christianity is not a religion; it’s a relationship.
• It’s not our works which save us. It’s our trust in Jesus’ saving work on the cross and His resurrection from the dead.
• On the Day of Judgment, God will know who are His. (Matthew 7:23)
• The Gospel is powerful. Jesus loves you and wants you to repent and put simple faith in Him. (Philippians 1:6)
• God takes dead trees and makes them alive.
• Jesus didn’t come just to change our final destination; He came to change who we are.
