How is the fulness of Christ manifested in the Christian home? What does it look like to parent biblically? What are the blessings promised to children who honor and obey their parents? Pastor Mike Knight continues our Colossian sermon series by examining Colossians 3:20-21.

Children are to obey their parents. (Colossians 3:20)

What does it mean to obey?

- Obedience is listening to and obeying your parents without excuse, without challenge, without delay, and with the right attitude.

What does it mean to honor?

- Honor is treating your parents with the proper respect and esteem because of their God-appointed position of authority.

What are God’s promised blessings for obeying and honoring your parents?

- Better Life – “May be well with you"

- Spiritual Blessing – Right with God

- Natural Blessing – Right with parents

- Longer Life - “Live long on the earth"

How often should children obey?

- “In all things” – In everything

- Well pleasing” – Obedience pleases God.

What must happen if a child does not obey?

- Parents must lovingly discipline the child. (Ephesian 6:4)

What does it mean to discipline and instruct?

- Discipline describes all aspects of child training including guidance, instruction, and both positive and negative discipline.

- Instruction means to rebuke or warn and has the idea of putting into the mind or building convictions.

- Loving discipline is giving your children guidance, instruction, rebuke, warning, and does include spanking.

Why should I spank my children?

- Because God says (Proverbs 23:13-14)

- In order to give them hope (Proverbs 19:18)

- Because you love them (Proverbs 13:24)

- Because it is best for them (Proverbs 22:15; 29:15; 29:17)

What is the goal of our discipline/instruction?

- To shepherd the child’s heart

- To point them to Christ

What are we to shepherd their hearts towards?

- Salvation

- Sanctification

What is the purpose of loving discipline?

- It always has a restorative purpose.

- To help your child return to God’s circle of blessing.

- It is always for the purpose of directing them to God.
