The Scripture never condones slavery, but it was a part of the Apostle Paul’s culture. The Scripture condemns the abuses of slavery. In Colossians 3:22-4:1, though addressing slaves and masters, we can learn how we as Christians should live out our completeness in Christ in our workplaces.
1. The Responsibility of a Christian Employee (Colossians 3:22-25)
• Obey your boss. (Colossians 3:22)
- The meaning of obeying your boss:
> Same Greek word used in Ephesians 6:1
> To listen and obey your boss immediately, without excuse, without complaint, without questioning, and with the right attitude
- The frequency of obeying your boss:
> “In all things” – in everything
> Unless it goes against Scripture
- The motive behind obeying your boss:
> You’re not working to promote yourself.
> You’re not working to please men.
> You’re working to please God. (Colossians 3:23; 1 Corinthians 10:31)
- Sincerity of heart implies a purity of motive. Your work is done with integrity.
• Work hard as for the Lord. (Colossians 3:23-25)
- The meaning of working hard:
> Work “from the soul”
> Be fully engaged in your work
> Give your work everything you do have
- The mentality behind working hard:
> You work for the Lord.
> Your work will be judged by the Lord.
- Your job is your ministry. (Matthew 5:16)
2. The Responsibility of a Christian Employer (Colossians 4:1)
• Be just. (Ephesians 6:9)
- Do what is right by God and right for others.
• Be fair.
- Treat everyone the same regardless of their ability, position or personality.
• Remember that your Boss is God.
