When addressing our speech, God begins with our vertical speech: our conversations with Him. How devoted are you to prayer? What hinders you from praying? How can we cultivate devotion toward prayer in our lives? Let’s examine Colossians 4:2-6.
1. Your Speech with God (Colossians 4:1-4)
• Be devoted to prayer.
- “Devoted” means to be earnestly, diligently, and constantly in prayer. (Acts 1:14; 2:42; 6:4; Romans 12:12; Luke 18:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:17)
- This does not mean that you are always praying.
- It means to live in a constant attitude of prayer that causes you to talk to God anywhere, at any time, about anything.
- This requires constant confession of sins. (Psalm 66:18)
• These are some practical suggestions to help you be devoted to prayer:
- Set aside a time each day to pray. Find a special place to pray (your “War Room”).(Luke 5:16: Acts 1:12-14)
- Follow a prayer list.
- Watch your posture when you pray.
- Pray aloud.
- Commit to attending Prayer Meeting.
- Talk to God before you talk to anyone else.
