God's Gym: The Exercise of Purity

February 23, 2020 Speaker: Michael Knight Series: God's Gym

Topic: Marriage, Purity Passage: Psalm 119:9–16

What does God have to say about purity? How can we as Christians live a pure life in an age of godlessness? We must submit to God’s Word and pursue Him! Let’s study Psalm 119:9-16.

1. It requires us to submit to God’s Word. (Psalm 119:9)
• What is “keeping it according to Your Word?"
- “It” refers back to “way” which refers to a person’s way of living.
- “Keep” means “watch over or guard.”
- If you want to stay pure, you must be careful to make sure your way of life is lived according to God’s Word.

• What does God consider morally impure?
- Any sexual thought or action outside of marriage is immoral, impure, and sinful.
- This would include adultery, fornication, homosexuality, lustful thoughts, and sexual fantasy.

Definitions:
> Adultery – Sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not his or her spouse (Exodus 20:14; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 18-19; 2 Timothy 2:22; Galatians 5:19)
> Fornication – Sexual intercourse between unmarried people (Hebrews 13:4)
> Homosexuality – Unnatural sexual relationship with a person of the same sex (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Romans 1)
> Lustful thoughts/Sexual fantasy – Any thought or fantasy that causes you to be aroused sexually outside of marriage (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5; 2 Corinthians 10:5)

• What does God consider morally pure?
- Sex in marriage is undefiled, unsoiled, and pure. (Hebrews 13:4)
- Sex in marriage is intended to be pleasurable and awesome!
- Sex in marriage is just as holy as praying, reading your Bible, attending church, witnessing, tithing, or preaching a sermon.
- God wants you to enjoy your sexual relationship with your spouse.

2. It requires us to seek God
wholeheartedly. (Psalm 119:10-16)
• Search for God. (Psalm 119:10)
• Hide God’s Word in your heart. (Psalm 119:11)
• Desire to be taught; be a learner. (Psalm 119:12)
• Talk about God’s Word. (Psalm 119:13)
• Rejoice in God’s Word and His guidance. (Psalm 119:14)
• Meditate on God’s Word. (Psalm 119:15)
• Delight in God’s Word and God’s way. (Psalm 119:16)
