How the Saved Should Live, Part 2

June 28, 2020 Speaker: Michael Knight Series: The Epistle of 1 Peter

Topic: Christian Growth Passage: 1 Peter 1:17–21

We are to live in the fear of God. (1 Peter 1:17-21) If we fear Him, we will want to live in a way that pleases Him. Do you live this way?

• The Command to Fear God (1 Peter 1:17)
- “Conduct yourselves” means “to behave one’s self or to live a certain way.”
- This is aorist passive imperative making this another specific command.
- While living on this earth as pilgrims, we are commanded to live in the fear of God. (Proverbs 1:7, 4:27 9:10, 8:13, 16:16, 22:4; 1 Samuel 12:24)
• The Meaning of Fearing God (1 Peter 1:17)
- “Fear” means “to dread, to be terrified, to be frightened, to be afraid or to reverence.”
- Here Peter is talking about having a reverential awe of God.
- “To fear God is to live with a reverential, respectful awe of God that causes you to want to please Him in everything you do and say.”
• The Reasons to Fear God (1 Peter 1:17-21)
- Because you are God’s child and God is your Father (1 Peter 1:17)
- Because God is an impartial, perfect Judge (1 Peter 1:17)
> We live before an audience of One.
> God sees all. He knows our thoughts and motives. (1 John 5:13)
> Would you do what you do if no one was watching?
- Because of our precious redemption (1 Peter 1:18-21)
> Our reverence of God rests on the knowledge of our redemption.
> Our redemption was not accomplished by man. (1 Peter 1:18)
> Our redemption was accomplished only through Christ and His precious blood. (1 Peter 1:19; Hebrews 9:12; Leviticus 17:11)
> Our redemption was the pre-determined plan of God. (1 Peter 1:20)
> Our redemption was specifically meant for you. (1 Peter 1:20)
> Our redemption allows us to have faith and hope in God. (1 Peter 1:21; Acts 4:7; John 14:24)
