Every person who loves God must live a life of submission. I Peter 3:1-6 addresses the topic of submission in the home. Continuing on with verse 7, let’s examine what submission means specifically to the husband.
The Submission of the Husband (1 Peter 3:7; Ephesians 5:21)
• The Person to Whom He is to Submit
- He is not telling the husband to submit to his wife.
- He is telling the husband to submit to the Lord.
• The Way He is to Submit to God
- He is to live with his wife in an understanding way.
> This means to be considerate, thoughtful, and respectful to your wife.
> This means to really know your wife so you know her desires, goals, frustrations, strengths, and weaknesses.
> This means to remember your wife is the weaker vessel.
What does weaker vessel mean?
- This is not a derogatory statement or a statement of inferiority.
- This is not saying a woman is weaker intellectually, morally, or spiritually.
- This is a reference to physical strength. Generally speaking, women are physically weaker than men.
- He is to show his wife honor.
> This means to respect your wife, hold your wife in high esteem, and treat your wife as valuable.
> This means to remember your wife is a co-sharer in the gracious gift of life.
Two Interpretations:
1. Both are co-sharers in God’s gracious gift of marriage in this life.
2. Both are co-sharers in salvation because they have been saved by grace through faith in Christ alone.
• The Results of Not Submitting to God
- His relationship with God is hindered.
- His relationship with his wife is hindered.
- His leadership in the home is hindered.
