Reminders That Stir Up God's People, Part 2

September 12, 2021 Speaker: Michael Knight Series: The Epistle of 2 Peter

Topic: Christian Growth Passage: 2 Peter 1:1–15

God has given believers the power to live a righteous life. However, the redeemed have the responsibility to apply all diligence in their faith to live a life pleasing to Him by adding the traits found in 2 Peter 1:5-11. These qualities build on one another and make each trait more fruitful.

1. Remember your position in Christ. (2 Peter 1:1)
• Your saving faith is a gracious gift of God.
• Your saving faith gives you, a sinful foreigner, heavenly citizenship as the apostles and other Christians.
• Your saving faith is based on the righteousness of another: Christ.

2. Remember your provision in Christ. (2 Peter 1:2-4)
• You have God's power.
• You have God's promises.
• You have God's nature.

3. Remember God's Process of Christ-likeness. (2 Peter 1:5-11)
• You're to diligently add Christ-like qualities to your life!
- Moral excellence (or goodness) (2 Peter 1:5-7)
> The courage to live a moral life and stand up for what is right.
> It is simply a commitment to be like Christ.
- Knowledge/Biblical wisdom
> The God-given ability to apply biblical principles to everyday life.
- Self-control
> The God-given ability to have your flesh and passions in control.
- Perseverance
> Doing right no matter what.
> Never give in or give up.
- Godliness
> Live reverently, obediently, and loyalty to God.
> Live a life of worship.
- Brotherly kindness
> It is being affectionate, having concern, and pouring your life into others.
- Love
> It is sacrificial love without expecting anything in return.

Adding these virtues demonstrates Christ-likeness.

• What are the results? (2 Peter 1:8-11)
- Fruitfulness
- Assurance of salvation
- Abundant entrance into heaven
> It’s a rich welcome in heaven receiving a “well-done” from the Lord.
