Beware of False Teachers

September 26, 2021 Speaker: Michael Knight Series: The Epistle of 2 Peter

Topic: The Church Passage: 2 Peter 2:1–2

Many people’s words are not trustworthy. How can we identify those who speak falsehood? How should we respond? What does the Bible have to say about false teachers? Let’s examine 2 Peter 2:1-2.

1. The Expectation of False Teachers (2 Peter 2:1a)
• With every truth, the devil offers a counterfeit. (John 8:39-47)
• The devil’s lies are spread through false teachers.
• Expect there to be false teachers and beware of them.

2. The Description of False Teachers (2 Peter 2:1b)
• They deliberately sneak in erroneous teachings that lead people to hell.
• They deliberately reject Christ as their Lord and Master. (Jude 4)
• They bring destruction on themselves and will be damned to hell.

3. The Influence of False Teachers (2 Peter 2:2)
• The Scope of Their Influence
- The sensual, sexual, fleshly living of false teachers tends to attract many.
- Why? People love a religion that allows them to live in sin and still live for God.
• The Sad Results of Their Influence
- They defame and hinder the testimony of the church and the true gospel.
- They use and abuse many people for their own gain. (Acts 8:9 cf)
- They lead people to hell.
