“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani” was the fourth saying of Jesus on the cross. Jesus didn’t cry out in anguish during His physical suffering, but He cried out in anguish over His Father’s abandonment while bearing our sin on the cross (1 Peter 2:24). Let's learn of Christ's great sacrifice and atoning work at Calvary.
1. The Extent of God’s Holiness
• God is so holy that He had to turn His face away from His Son Who bore our sins. (Exodus 33:21-23)
2. The Explanation of God’s Abandonment
• Why did God forsake His Son?
• God’s holy character demands that He judge sin even though it be found on His Son. (Psalm 22:1-3; 2 Corinthians 5:21)
3. The Enormity of God’s Wrath
• It’s incomprehensible and unimaginable.
