We all want joy. We all want treasure. Our problem is that we pursue things that give us temporary joy. We need to seek the one thing that gives eternal joy.
In Matthew 13:44, a man found a valuable treasure in a field that was not his own. He re-buried it and then bought the field to secure the treasure for himself.
As believers in Christ, our citizenship has been transferred to the Kingdom of Heaven. Christ rules over the Kingdom and, therefore, rules in our hearts. (Colossians 1:13-14; John 3:1-17)
What treasure is worth living?
1. Your spiritual life is rare, and you have it in abundance! (Ephesians 1:7-8a, 2:4-7; Matthew 7:14; John 10:10)
2. Your spiritual life is the source of all true joy.
- Our spiritual life is the most valuable thing we possess. It should bring us joy.
- Abiding in Christ is how we have joy in abundance. (John 15:11)
- Am I seeking joy from other sources?
3. Your spiritual life is to be your focus.
- Because of his joy, he goes AND sells AND buys the field. He does all 3 things joyously because he realizes that the treasure is real, will provide abundance, and will bring him joy.
- He sells ALL that he has to procure the treasure.
- He surrenders his possessions. We should be willing to surrender everything we have to Christ. When we do, it will bring us joy. Don’t hold back your resources. Give them over to God.
- Notice this man’s priorities. He puts the most important thing first. We should put our spiritual life first. Everything that hinders us spiritually should be set aside or removed. Then we can have abundant joy!
