The Supremacy of Christ

April 14, 2019 Speaker: Michael Knight Series: Colossians

Topic: Christ Passage: Colossians 1:15–18

In our text, Paul addresses the heresy of the Gnostics. The Gnostics struck at the very core of salvation: Denial of the humanity and deity of Christ. They believed that man could improve himself, and, therefore, Christ was not needed.

A person cannot be saved without Christ’s humanity and His deity. Jesus is the only sinless Man. He is the only One qualified to take the punishment for our sin since He was not deserving of punishment Himself. Jesus is the God-Man. As Deity, He resurrected from the dead and is the only One Who has the power to raise us to life eternal.

The Supremacy of Christ

1. Jesus Christ is God. (Colossians 1:15a; Hebrews 1:3; John 1:1, 14, 18; 20:28; Romans 9:5; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Philippians 2:6; Colossians 2:9; Titus 2:13; Hebrews 1:8; 1 John 5:20)

2. Jesus Christ is the Creator. (Colossians 1:15b-17)
- Christ is the Firstborn over all creation. (Colossians 1:15)
• This refers to His rank, not His birth order. (Psalm 89:27)
- Christ is the Agent of creation. (Colossians 1:16)
- Christ is the end and goal of creation. (Colossians 1:16; Romans 11:36; Philippians 2:11)
- Christ is the Sustainer of all creation. (Colossians 1:17)
• Because Christ is Creator and Sustainer, He knows best how to order our lives.

3. Jesus Christ is the Head of the Church. (Colossians 1:18)
- Christ is our only hope.

4. Jesus Christ should be first in your life. (Colossians 1:18)
- He wants to rule and reign in your life.
