Since Christians are complete in Christ, how do believers guard this truth? How does a believer live out this truth practically? Let’s examine Colossians 3:1-3 to find the answer.
1. The Command (Colossians 3:1)
• “Keep Seeking” means “to deliberately pursue, endeavor to obtain, strive for.”
• “Things above” clearly refers to the throne of heaven. (Matthew 6:33)
• It’s not just a command to focus on the physical things of heaven but on the Person of Jesus Christ.
2. The Choice (Colossians 3:2)
• “Set your mind” means ”to exercise the mind, to have a mindset, to think about.”
• To make a willful choice to think on Christ and to think like Christ. (Philippians 2:5; Romans 12:1-2)
• To make a willful choice to stop thinking about pleasing people and acquiring possessions. (Matthew 6:21; 1 Corinthians 10:13; Philippians 4:13)
3. The Reasons (Colossians 3:3-4)
• It’s because of what Christ has done for us in the past.
- The power of the sin nature is cut off.
- We are safe and secure in Christ.
• It’s because of what Christ will do for us in the future.
- He will return to take us home.
- He will give us resurrected bodies, and we will be with him forever. (Philippians 3:20-21)
